Rav Avin Bar Rav Adda said in the name of Rav Yitzchak, “What is the source that Hashem lays tefillin? As it says נשבע ה' בימינו, ובזרוע עזו, Hashem has sworn by His right hand, and His powerful arm… (Yeshayahu 62:8)Today, in a US airplane, a tefillin-wearing Jew was a source of fear to at least one stewardess and a pilot. News flash:
…בזרוע עזו, with His powerful arm — this refers to tefillin, as the verse states: ה' עז לעמו יתן, Hashem gives might to his nation (Tehillim 29:11). … And where is the source that tefillin are עוז, might and power for the Jewish people? As it is written וראו כל עמי הארץ כי שם ה' נקרא עליך, ויראו ממך, and all the nations of the world will see that the name of Hashem is called upon you, and they will fear you (D’vorim 28:10). … Rav Elazer the Great said this verse is referring to the tefillin worn on the head.” (Brachos 6a)

As the police chief said, "Wearing these devices which are called 'olfactories'..."
I think we should call that container with samim for Havdala “an olfactory”.
One guy once asked me what tefillin are. I said the boxes contain relics — usually bones of Jewish saints.
That's only because you're from New Orleans.
That’s because I read books. (Sometimes about Catholics.)
Believe it or not, I’ve never encountered anything voodoo while living in New Orleans (not even a funeral march). And my last year I lived next to a cemetery (I learned how to ride a bicycle riding around it at night). The closest thing to voodoo I’ve ever heard of was my friend’s car being egged.
Ahh. Quite.
